Goodykoontz, Irene Allen

Irene Allen Goodykoontz, 99, widow of Walter C. Goodykoontz, departed this life March 15, 2011. Mrs. Goodykoontz was the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Allen. Although born in Roanoke, her parents moved to Radford when she was a small child so most of her life was spent in Radford. A graduate of Radford High School, Mrs. Goodykoontz continued her education at Radford College (now Radford University), graduating with a B.S. degree. For approximately 30 years she worked as assistant to her husband, Walter, who was SecretaryTreasurer of a District of Kiwanis International. Mrs. Goodykoontz became a member of Grove United Methodist Church in June 1922. For a number of years she served as SecretaryTreasurer of the Sunday school; served several times as a Circle Chairman in the United Methodist Women’s organization, was a past treasurer of that group, and was treasurer of the Church’s Memorial Committee for a number of years. She was a past president of the Women’s Club of Radford. After retirement, Mrs. Goodykoontz became a volunteer in the Meals-on-Wheels program, serving for over 25 years. She had also volunteered on the Red Cross Bloodmobile program. She has no immediate family; her closest family are several cousins. In her later years, because of several handicaps, it was necessary for Mrs. Goodykoontz to rely on others for many tasks. She gave thanks daily for many members of her Grove Church and for dear friends, all of whom gave in some way for her comfort and happiness. She considered herself to be truly blessed. It was her wish that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Grove United Methodist Church, 1020 Tyler Avenue, Radford, VA 24141. A memorial service will be held at Grove United Methodist Church on Friday, March 18, 2011, 2 p.m. with the Reverend Karen Lane officiating. Arrangements by DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.
