Glenn, Thelma Helton

Thelma Helton Glenn, 100, of Pulaski, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015 at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Fairlawn. Born Thelma Irene Helton, on April 10, 1915 in Pulaski County, she was the daughter of the late William Bruce Helton and Mary Augusta Duncan Helton Lucas.

She was predeceased by her husband, James R. Glenn II and one son, Ronald Glenn.

She is survived by four children, Elizabeth Glenn Hurt of Yorktown, James R. Glenn III of Westerly, R.I., Nick and Mary Beth Glenn of Pulaski, and Tammy Glenn of Midlothian; five grandchildren, Lee Anne and Tom Chesterfield of Yorktown, Ron Glenn of St. Petersburg, Fla., Marsha Hurt of Yorktown, Ginger Glenn of Winston Salem, N.C., Meredith and Wally McGrady of Draper; two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Bryce Chesterfield of Yorktown; one stepsister, Linda Harris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sister-in-law, Helen Lu Glenn of Pulaski nephew, Charles Boley and Donald Glenn; and nieces, Jeanie Glenn and Lucy Glenn.

Thelma was very active in volunteering throughout her life. She worked with the Red Cross during World War II and was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Circle leader and Co-Director of the Youth Club for many years. Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be fondly remembered for her joyful laughter, her sense of humor, her love of gardening and birds, as well as her captivating oral history. Thelma was the “rock” of her family and was the shoulder for her family and friends to lean on, sharing their joys and sorrows and always being able to dispense hopeful, but sensible advise that never failed to leave them feeling that things were never as bad as they seemed. Her legacy will live on in her family with the instilled values and generosity she taught in their upbringing.

The family would like to thank the staff of Commonwealth Assisted Living and Carilion Clinic Hospice of the New River Valley for their services and loving compassion.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski.
