Garth, Catherine Ann

Catherine Ann Garth, a long time resident of Radford, passed away at The Newport in Newport News on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Ann was a homemaker who became an active volunteer for St. Albans in their patient and professional libraries, as well as Meals on Wheels and Daily Bread of Radford.

In the early 1970s, she led members of the Radford Women’s Club and community members in establishing the monthly paper drive which was recognized with a National Sears Community Award. She served as the head librarian for the Radford City Library from 1974 to 1976. Ann was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church and served in various ministries over the years.

Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William “Bill” Garth; her daughter, Virginia Garth; brother, “Skip” Quinlan; and parents, John and Margret Quinlan.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Herb Smith of Newport News; son and daughter-in-law, William and Deena Garth of Burnsville, Miss.; son-in-law, John Cochrane; four grandchildren, Arch, Christopher and his wife, Elizabeth, Paige, William John; and great-grandsons, Michael and Colin.

The family would like to thank the nursing and CNA staff of The Newport for the loving care they provided Ann the last two years.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Radford on February 9, 2015, with a graveside service at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem at 2:30 p.m.
