furr_dora_mondonDora Anne (Mondon) Furr, 81, of Brooksville, Fla., and formerly of Blacksburg, Va., died on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at HPH Hospice Care Center. Born in Bartow, Fla., she grew up in Brooksville and was valedictorian of her class at Hernando High School. She graduated from Florida State University and received her Master’s Degree in Botany from the University of Michigan. She was a candidate for her doctorate degree at Duke University when she met her future husband, Keith. She was head librarian for the Blacksburg (VA) Public Library and was a volunteer in the public schools and scouting organizations in Virginia. After retiring to Florida in 1998, she was a volunteer for Hospice in Brooksville. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Aaron “Keith;” sons, Joel Keith Furr (Carole), and Robin Stuart Furr (Jessica Theodor); daughters, Elizabeth Anne Furr, and Julia Furr Youngman (Paul); brothers, Doda Gorton Mondon Jr., and Thomas Hugh Mondon; sisters, Esther Bartlett and Eva Mondon; and three grandchildren, Alexander Peter Youngman, Madeleine Olivia Young, and Lily Erin Youngman. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m., today, Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to Habitat for Humanity.
