fraley_elizabeth_kinnairdElizabeth Gilbert Kinnaird Fraley, 89, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away at home on December 27, 2009. She was born on June 4, 1920, to Harriett Cooper and William Elbert Gilbert.

Elizabeth grew up in Radford and graduated from Radford College where she was president of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and May Queen. As a young woman, she was an avid equestrian. During World War II, Elizabeth was employed by Radford Arsenal and later taught special education in Christiansburg. As the wife of an Air Force officer, she enjoyed travel to many countries. In her last years, Elizabeth resided in Christiansburg and Radford where she was an active member of Radford Presbyterian Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a beloved aunt, Ethel Cooper; brothers, William Cooper and John Bailey Gilbert; her first husband, James Duncan Kinnaird; and her second husband, Elmer Fraley.

Surviving are daughters, Anne Fraley Hickling and husband, Dan, and Barbara Fraley Simmons and husband, Rob; son, James Duncan Kinnaird Jr. and wife, Sharron; grandchildren, Heather Kinnaird Warren and husband, Scott, Sam and Katie Simmons, and Andrew, Christopher, and Alexandra Hickling; and great grandchildren, Isabelle and Luke Warren.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Horne Funeral Home of Christiansburg. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church with Dr. Donald Makin officiating. The family will receive friends at the Hickling residence, 1445 Red Hawk Run in Christiansburg from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County Humane Society.
