David Clark Foltz, 71, of Narrows, died peacefully at home on January 3, 2006. He was born on December 21, 1934 in Bluefield, W.Va., and was a lifelong educator who taught from the elementary to the college level. Dr. Foltz was a 1952 graduate of Narrows High School and a 1956 graduate of Roanoke College, where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1971 for distinguished performance in basketball and track.

He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps from 1956-1959, where he received numerous recognitions for his accomplishments in basketball and track. He received a master’s degree from Kean College in New Jersey and earned his Ph.D. in education from Southern Illinois University.

From 1974-77, he was an assistant professor of education at Roanoke College where he also coached cross country and track. He later taught in Monroe County and retired from Bland County Schools in 1996. Larger than life in spirit, personality and intellect, he had a booming voice and a quick wit. He loved spending time on his farm and was passionate about fishing and golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Ann Foltz Goforth. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ann (Nancy) Hyland Foltz; daughter Carolyn and son-in-law Richard Walat; son Patrick and daughter-in-law Nancy Foltz; son David C. Foltz II; as well as five grandchildren, Alexander, Emma, Thomas, Tess and Joseph. Other survivors include devoted family friends David and Gail Sable and family.

A memorial service officiated by the Rev. Kim Jones will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg, VA, at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2006. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Salvation Army. Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows is serving the Foltz family.
