fleenor kenneth mikeKenneth Mike Fleenor, of Pulaski, Va., passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, after a three year battle with lung cancer at the age of 74. Born on May 3, 1937, in Abingdon, Va., he was the youngest of four children born to Carl Foy and Nina Hines Fleenor. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Francis and Donald Fleenor. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Anderson Fleenor; and his two sons and their spouses, K. Mike Fleenor Jr. and Yvette Kellar Fleenor, of Pulaski, Va., and Dr. Jonathan Todd Fleenor and wife, Darcy G. Fleenor, of Chesapeake, Va.; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Hannah, Joseph and Ily Fleenor. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Fleenor Aikman, formerly of Chevy Chase, Md., and now of Louisville, Ga. After graduating from Emory & Henry College with a B.S. in Chemistry, he attended and obtained his D.D.S. from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In 1963 he opened a dental practice in Pulaski where he practiced for 25 years. He began a new career as an Account Executive with Wheat First Securities and later became the Director and Dentist in Residence at the Dental Hygiene Clinic at Wytheville Community College. He held many positions in the community including Little League Baseball coach, Lion’s Club past President, Trustee and member of various committees of the First United Methodist Church, and he served as a Board member of the Randolph House Foundation. He was elected and served a four year term on the Pulaski Town Council. But perhaps most important and significant to him was his extensive involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as a young boy and continued his involvement in Scouting for the remainder of his life as he held several positions including Scoutmaster, Wood Badge Coordinator and Course Director. He served numerous terms as a board member of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council and ultimately was awarded the prized Silver Beaver award. Camps Powhatan and Ottari were second homes to him. He spent many years on the tennis courts and later in life developed his considerable talents in wood carving and woodworking. He will be profoundly missed by his family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski with a social and celebration of his life immediately thereafter. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in his honor be made to the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski or the American Cancer Society .
