James Rudolph “Rudy” Finney, 61, departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Salem VA Medical Center. At an early age he became a member of the Mount Zion Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was a student at Floyd County High School until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was in the military for 10 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Anyone and everyone who knew “Rudy”, knew he loved cars. He worked as a mechanic until his health began to fail. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Earnest Dortch; grandparents, Willie and Gladys Finney; mother-in-law, Dora Jane Franklin; brother-in-law, Milton Franklin; two uncles, Elmer and Sam Finney; aunt, Eveline Cannaday; and special friend, Theresa Smith. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Georgetta Franklin-Finney; son, Antoin l. Finney; three daughters, Juanita L. Ingram, Brittany L. Finney, and Ashanti R. Via; granddaughter, Skylar Sykes; mother, Juanita Dortch; uncle, Henry L. Finney, of Leesburg, Va.; three aunts, Roberta Williams, of White Plains, N.Y., Theresa Harden, of Danville, Va., and Constance Hall; brother-in-law, Lynell Franklin; four sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Billy) Beauchamp, Dora Ann Franklin, Dorene Terry, and Belinda Franklin, all of New Haven, Conn.; special cousin and friend, Freddie Stuart; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Salem VA Medical Center for the caring of Mr. Finney. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2009, at 12 noon at the Garden of Prayer #7, 3101 Cove Road, Roanoke, Va. with Bishop Shadrack Brown Jr. and the Rev. Dennis Akers. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at the Big Oak Cemetery in Floyd, Va. Online Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.
