Hampton Myron “Rooster” Fillinger, 81, of Pearisburg went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at his home.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born February 24, 1924 and was the son of the late James and Lynnie Mae Cooper Fillinger. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Fillinger Wilkinson; his second wife, Ruth Conley Fillinger; two brothers, Macadoo Fillinger and Oliver “Cooge” Fillinger; and two sisters, Margaret Whittaker and Helen Wilkinson.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was on the second wave at Normandy on D-Day in 1944. He was also a retired employee of Celanese Acetate in Narrows with over 40 years service.

He is survived by three daughters, Doris Cumbee of Narrows, Rebecca Fillinger of Rosemount, Minn., and Regina Hazlewood of Princeton; two grandsons, Cody and Casey Hazlewood, both of Princeton; and a very special companion with which he made his home, Ann Perdue of Pearisburg.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28th, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Post #68 of Narrows and American Legion Post #311 of Pembroke.
