farris_eugenia_showalterEugenia Showalter Farris, 95, of Newbern, Va., died Monday evening, January 3, 2011, in Lewis Gale Hospital Montgomery. She was the last of 11 children and daughter of Edward Thomas and Alice Mae (Mackie) Cummins Showalter. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Henry Arthur Farris and son, Thomas Edward Farris, of Newbern. Also preceding her in death were seven sisters, Ruby S. Stafford, Beulah S. Gowin, Elizabeth S. Walker, Kathryn S. Yeager, Winifred S. Shelburne, Carmel Showalter, Lenore Showalter; and three brothers, Julian, Cyril, and Wendell Showalter. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Farris, of Woodstock, Ga.; and one grandson of Dublin, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Gae Showalter, Sylvia Farris, Annis Farris, and one brother-in-law, Tyree Farris. She had been a long-time member of the Pulaski County Women’s Republican Club and Newbern Homemakers Club where she held the office of President and Treasurer. Eugenia has been a faithful member of the Radford Church of Christ. Her grandfather, Josiah T. Showalter, was a minister and respected writer in the Church of Christ. G.H.P. Showalter, her uncle, was the editor of the “Firm Foundation”, in Austin, Texas for many years. Eugenia grew up on a farm near Snowville, and worshiped with her family at the New Salem Church of Christ, where her grandfather and father both preached. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Radford Church of Christ, 700 Eighth Street, Radford, Virginia 24141 with Mr. John Croft and Mr. Rudolph Shelburne officiating. Interment will follow in the Newbern Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:30 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service time at the church building.
