Evans, Robert Edward

Robert Edward Evans climbed his last mountain and rode off peacefully into the setting sun in the foothills of his beloved Blue Ridge on July 9th, 2021. “Pop” left his family in a puddle of tears at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.

Bob was born on April 7th 1933 in Scranton, PA, thirty-two years before thirty thousand pounds of bananas descended upon the town. He led a full life as a cyclist, Air Force vet, chaplain, teacher, therapist, woodcarver, Knobbit creator, story teller, wannabe seamstress, wardrobe thief, and above all he was an avid listener and friend to all.

Bob was the son of the late Delbert E & Bernice Morgan Evans and brother of the late Doris Howard.

His beautiful and adoring wife Lillian Reed Evans (who penned this section) somehow put up with his antics for the better part of 43 years. How she outlived him, no one knows.

He was so loved by his many children, including but not limited to his 3 children with Nancy Arndt Henry, Mark Evans, Karen (favorite-daughter) Hennigan & Charlie, Todd (if-only-all-the-kids-could-be-like-him) Evans & Lisa along with Lil’s kids — their brothers from another mother — Eric Underwood & Dawn, Chad Williams & Malory as well as his 3 adopted children, Todd Kanode & Kim, Henry Hopkins & Connie, Robert Oglesby & Melanie and daughter-in-law De’ana.

His grandchildren Kathrin (Lil Elephant), Gunny, Goose, Butter, Reed, Arro & the Mighty Quinn knew and loved him as “Pop” as did his honorary grandchildren Jonathan, Kayla, Karis, Nate, Michael, Becky, Ayden, Sienna and numerous others from far and wide. Ski Kings, the Captain has let it fly.

Bebie Kanode, Walter Reed, Mary French & Mike, Marcy Miller & Richard all welcomed “Bubbie” into their lives as a warm and fuzzy alternative to their older sister Lil.

“Uncle Bob” to favorite niece Margie Howard, and nephews Greg Howard, Janet & family and Billy Howard, Natalie & family.

The family sends thanks to Dr. Shakhatreh and Margaret Arnold, RN for their loving care through the long haul and to the caregiving staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for their kindness during Bob’s final days and their patience with the entourage of family and friends and their waiting room antics.

There was always a seat next to Bob or in his lap for a simple hello or an hourlong chat — whether you wanted it or not.

Please join us for “Life with a Beard — a Celebration from the Salad Days to the Golden Years of Bob Evans” on August 15th, 2021 at Buckeye Farm Pavilion in Newport, VA. Doors open at 2 with a memorial service sometime around 3pm, depending on when Lil can get her act together.

Please consider a donation in Bob’s name to the charity of your choice. Any trade skills or perhaps a “bouquet” of red wine, preferably Apothic Red, will also be accepted. Most importantly, please give your loved ones or even someone you just met a big hug. It’s what Pop would do. A guestbook is available by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com. The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to be serving the Evans Family.
