Elliott, Donald Stouffer

Donald Stouffer Elliott, 93, of Blacksburg, Va., passed peacefully in his home on Friday, August 5, 2016. A native of Hagerstown, Md., Donald was a World War II army radio operator in the 385th AAA Battalion, an anti-aircraft unit.

He earned five bronze battle stars: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, as well as three ribbons: American Theater Service, World War II Victory, and European African Middle Eastern Service. Upon his return, he married Margaret L. Smith of New Market, Md., the love of his life for 56 years who preceded him in death in 2002.

Donald worked as a foreman and machinist for Fairchild Hiller for 42 years, supervising the tool/dye department. A kind man appreciated for his humor and quick wit, Donald was known to many in the Blacksburg area as the “go to” fix-it guy, and would patiently provide shuttle service for numerous river outings enjoyed by his daughter, family members, and friends.

A dedicated and loving father, he is survived by two sons, Donald S. Elliott Jr., of Defiance, Mo., and D. Stephen Elliott of St. Paul, Minn.; and daughter Jean M. Elliott of Blacksburg. He also had nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Donald out-lived all four of his siblings, as well as his parents Guy M. Elliott and Eva Stouffer Elliott. The Elliotts were both longtime members of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Mount Olivet Chapel in Frederick, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation (mds-foundation.org) or to the Sojourn Center, a home for hospice care (http://sojourncenter.org) at PO Box 295, Blacksburg, Va. 24063. The family greatly appreciates the caregivers and nursing staff of Carilion Hospice, who provided attentive, personable and professional care in Donald’s final months.
