Edwards, Don A.

edwards_don_aSergeant Major (retired) Don A. Edwards, 85, of Blacksburg, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016. He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Wolford and father, Pearly Edwards, and his son.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bok H. Edwards; daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Terry Vasknetz, Colonel (retired) Corey and Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Kurt Langenwalter; and grandchildren, Captain Caley Langenwalter and Samantha Vasknetz.

Don served in the United States Army for 30 years as an Infantryman. He was a wounded combat veteran who served two tours in the Korean War and was one of 406 men who comprised of Task Force Smith, 24th Infantry Division, which was the first U.S. Army ground maneuver unit to enter combat in Korea. He also served in the Vietnam War with the 1st Cavalry Division. He retired from the Army after serving as the Sergeant Major of the Army ROTC Department at Virginia Tech.

There was no doubt, that Don loved his country, our Army, and his family most of all.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Saturday August 13, 2016, Blacksburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends following the service until 6 p.m. His funeral service will be held at Fort Myer with internment at Arlington National Cemetery, date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans in his honor.
