Mildred Harless Duncan, of Newport, was born April 21, 1926, and passed on to everlasting life on Monday, July 21, 2008, as the result of complications from a recent stroke.

Mildred was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 58 years, Stanley V. Duncan; and her father and mother, William “Billy” H. and Stella Bland Harless. Also proceeding was her brother, Malcom Coe Harless, and her “baby” brother, Bobby Joe Harless.

Mildred’s love and memories will always and forever be cherished by those surviving her, sisters, Bernice Camper, of Salem, Va., and Alice Osborne, of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Jane Ann Duncan Burner, of Staunton, Va.; and her son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Wayne and Ruth Morris Duncan, of Newport, Va. Surviving also are her loving grandchildren, Caroline Burner, of New York, N.Y., Christopher Burner and his wife, Natanya, of Pasadena, Calif., and Troy A. Duncan and wife, Heather Fields Duncan; great-grandchildren, Tanner and Andrew “Drew,” of New Castle, Va., and Mary Margaret “Margee” Chandler and husband, Scott, greatgrandchildren, Haley and Hagan, of Riner, Va., Mark W. Duncan and wife, Lenore Weiss Duncan; and great-grandchild, Elijah, of Newport, Va.

She felt a very special kindred spirit to all of her Harless relatives. Mildred worked very hard to care for and provide for her family. She was first and foremost a dedicated farmer’s wife living on their farm in the beautiful Sinking Creek Valley in Craig County near Newport. Mildred also worked more than 30 years for VA Tech in dining services and was eager to be a mother figure to all the students living away from home. She enjoyed several of these very special connections that lasted until her death.

Mom/MawMaw will be sadly missed by her family, her friends and her neighbors, but we all know she will be joining those she loved so very much that preceded in death in a serene and peaceful everlasting life.

McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Va., is handling the arrangements. The family will be receiving visitation on Wednesday evening, July 23, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Level Green Christian Church in Newport, where she was a long-term member. Service will be conducted by Mike Whitaker. Interment will follow at the Ross Cemetery on Route 42 near Maywood. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, S.E., Blacksburg, Va., 540-552-3211.
