Norman Willis Dowdy, 74, of Dublin, died Friday morning January 23, 2009, at his residence. He was born October 6, 1934, in Giles County, and was the son of the late Rebecca Higginbotham Dowdy and Charles Arthur Dowdy.

He was a retired Master Trooper for the Virginia State Police Department having served the Commonwealth of Virginia for 37 + years. 30 years of his service was spent in Pulaski County. He was a member of the New Dublin Presbyterian Church and will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, fantastic father, and caring grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty Corell Dowdy, of Dublin; one son, Norman (Buck) Dowdy II and his wife, Casey, of Dublin; two daughters, Sandy Dowdy Singleton, of Pulaski, and Tammy Dowdy Sayers and her husband, Eddie, of Dublin; three brothers, Allan Bud Dowdy and his wife, Nancy, of Roanoke, Joe Bud Dowdy and his wife, Nancy, of Pearisburg, and Peyton Higginbotham and his wife, Jeanie, of Chiefton, Fla.; three grandchildren, Holly Ann Dowdy, of Dublin, Zane Parker Yopp, of Dublin, and Jedidiah Lee Singleton, of Pulaski. Also survived by three special friends, Kennard Phipps, of Newport and the Rev. J.P. Hale, of Draper, and Master Trooper Tex Hall, of Dublin.

Funeral services will be held Monday January 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. First Sgt. Mike Honker, the Rev. J.P. Hale, and the Rev. G.T. Hurst officiating. Interment will follow in the New Dublin Presbyterian Church Cemetery where the Virginia State Police will conduct military honors.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dublin United Methodist Church.
