Dowdy, Mary Wilson

Mary Wilson Dowdy, 71, of Newport, departed this life on Monday evening, April 25, 2011, at her home in the loving care of her family. Born in Pembroke on March 7, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson and Gladys Songer Cumbee.

She had been employed for many years at Virginia Tech in food service and ID management.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Irvin Cumbee; her sister, Reba Cumbee; and her half brothers, Marvin, Martin, Roscoe, and William Dowdy. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 56 years, Claude “Jack” Dowdy; her son, Harold Dowdy, of Blacksburg; her daughters, Sandy Dowdy, of Blacksburg, Sylvia and Donnie Stump, of Newport, and Melissa and Mike Vanhoozier, of Newport; her grandchildren, Summer Ramsey, Lindsey Dowdy, Angie Wesley, Brandy Viars, Michael, Michelle, and Wayne Vanhoozier; and her greatgrandchildren, Demon “DJ” Wesley, Noah Ramsey, Brady Tilley.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
