James Witten Dowdy, 80, of Blacksburg died, Saturday, March 17, 2007, at his home. He was born in Montgomery County on July 1, 1926 to the late Lawrence Whitney and Della Cooper Dowdy. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Thompson Dowdy, five brothers and one sister. He was a veteran of W.W.II, having served overseas in the US Navy.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Della and Walter Stokley of Roanoke, Joyce and Bob Farmer of Christiansburg, Vicki and Donnie Lucas, Christiansburg; sons and daughter-in-law, Mortie James Dowdy, of Victoria, Va., Dannie Ray Dowdy of Blacksburg, Steve Wayne Dowdy of Blacksburg, Frank and Genevia Dowdy of Blacksburg; sister, Betty Stover of Christiansburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Dora Dowdy of Christiansburg, Earl and Jean Dowdy of Christiansburg, Nelson Dowdy of Roanoke; nineteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; special companion, Mary Cumbee and her children, Johnny Cumbee, Louise Snider; and special pal, Charlie.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 12 noon Monday, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg.
