Dowdy, Claude “Jack”

“Jack” Claude McKinley Dowdy, 90, of Newport, departed this life Tuesday morning, April 10, 2018 at his home in the loving care of his family and hospice.

Born in Pembroke on April 15, 1927, he was a son of the late Bert and Lizzie Williams Dowdy. He was a man of the outdoors, a carpenter who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and playing cards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Cumbee Dowdy, his son Harold Dean Dowdy, his brothers Marcus, Alvie, Bee, Bill, and Bert Junior Dowdy, his sisters Mary Atkins and Hazel Fisher.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters and sons-in-law Sylvia and Donnie Stump of Newport, Melissa and Mike Vanhoozier of Newport, Sandy Dowdy of Newport and “like a daughter” Nancy Cothran of Blacksburg; his grandchildren Brandy Viars, Michael Vanhoozier, Michelle Olinger, Wayne Vanhoozier, Summer Ramsey, Lindsey dowdy, Angie Wesley; his eight great-grandchildren; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
