John Joseph Dorsa, 80, of the White Gate Community, Pearisburg, died on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Highland Ridge Rehab Center.

He was born on November 27, 1927, at New York City, N.Y., the son of the late Charles and Anna Marie Cotter Dorsa. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by a son, John Lawrence Dorsa. Active in the Masonic Order, Capt. John J. Dorsa was a Past Master of Darien Lodge AF & AM Balboa Canal Zone, (now under the Republic of Panama). He held the positions of District Grand Lecturer, District Senior Grand Warden and Deputy District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge. He was installed as District Grand of the Right Worshipful District Grand Lodge at the Panama. Canal in December 1983. The installation was held at the Grand Lodge in Boston, Mass. Rt. Worshipful Dorsa held the highest position in the District Grand Lodge at the Panama Canal and the third highest position in the Most Worshipful Grand Ledge of Massachusetts for three years. He was an active member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction, United States of America. Member of the Panama Canal Scottish Rite Bodies, Balboa, Republic of Panama and in 1983 he was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary 33nd Degree at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Panama Canal York Rite Bodies and held the title of Knight Templar. John was Potentate of Abou Saad Shriners Balboa, in 1983 and Representative to the Imperial Council of the Shrine of North America.

Capt. Dorsa has dropped anchor for the last time, bringing to an end a career at Sea that began when he was 16 years old. Sailing with United States Lines he rose from an ordinary seaman to command of his own ship at the age of 31. He joined the Panama Canal Company in 1964 as a Panama Canal Pilot which he held until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Gusler Dorsa. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008, at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate with the Rev. Jack Jenkins and the Rev. J.D. Clark officiating. Burial in the Walkers Creek Cemetery, Inc., White Gate.

The visitation will be held Friday, August 8, 2008, at the funeral home after 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Walkers Creek Cemetery, Inc. c/o Ernest Miller, 369 Walkers Creek Valley Road, Pearisburg, Va. or the Shriners Children’s Hospital Transportation Fund, Shriners Headquarters, Tampa, Fla.
