Grover Stanton Dodson of Blacksburg, VA passed away Feb 13, 2017.

Grover was born Feb 17, 1921 to James Stanton and Zaidee Peters Dodson. On Apr 17, 1942, he married his lifelong love Harriet Gwendolyn Jones Dodson. After nearly 75 years together, he followed her in death by a mere 7 days.

Beginning their life together in Norfolk, VA, Grover and Gwen eventually settled into their Virginia Beach home, where they lived nearly 52 years. In 2014, the couple relocated to Blacksburg, VA.

A World War II Army veteran, Grover was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge with 3 major battle stars. After leaving the Army in 1945, he retired after a 33 year civil service career at the former NARF. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Grover was well known for his quick wit and humor. He loved working in his yard, watching football and playing golf. He was an active member of Azalea Baptist Church in Norfolk for over 50 years.

He is survived by two brothers, Roy (Margaret) Dodson of Virginia Beach, VA and James (Mary) Dodson of Atlanta, GA; and by four sons: Lewis A. Dodson and wife Louise of The Villages, FL, Ronald S. Dodson of The Villages, FL, David E. Dodson and wife Linda of Virginia Beach, and Douglas B. Dodson of Blacksburg, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Stephanie Hayes (Steve), Brian Dodson (Mandy), Gregory Dodson (Krista), Kimberly Carroll (Chris), Audrey Breen (Andrew), and Leigh Marquay (Glenn), as well as 14 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife, Gwen Dodson, he is also predeceased by by his daughter-in-law Carolyn Dodson (Ronald), and by 3 brothers and 1 sister.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Princess Anne Memorial Park on N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Azalea Baptist Church – See more at this link
