Lowell moved to Pearisburg, Virginia at the age of 12, graduating from Pearisburg High School in 1946. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows for 67 years. During those years, he served as deacon, church treasurer, on the financial committee, permanent fund committee and in the Christian Men’s Fellowship. He and his wife, Jean were co-owners of the B&B Stores in Narrows and Pearisburg. He was a member of both the Narrows and Pearisburg Chambers of Commerce, as well as the Lions Club for many years. Lowell was a member of the Giles Country Club for many years where enjoyed many rounds of golf with his friends.

Known as “Pawpaw,” he will be greatly missed by his nine grandchildren, Eric Thompson of Dickson, Tennessee, Ryan Booth of Wheaton, Illinois, Natasha Thompson Parlier of Boomer, North Carolina, Melissa Booth Bitsky of Plainfield, Illinois, Lori Booth Mayer of Frisco, Texas, Dori and James Bush of Newton, New Hampshire, and Owen and Grace Coleman of Denver, Colorado; and thirteen great-grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa D.”

As an only child, he was happy to become a member of the large Broyles family. By marrying Jean, he was blessed with two brothers, six sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
