Davie, Sydney Bentley
Sydney Graham Bentley Davie, 99, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at her daughters’ residence following a long, fruitful life. She was born in Dublin, Va., October 8, 1915 to James Randal Kent Bentley and Dulcie Still Bentley. She was the widow of Charles James Davie, whom she married November 20, 1947.
She was an educated lady, and worked in Ladies Retail as Manager for Sidney’s Clothing Shop in Pulaski, Va. She was the oldest member of Dublin Presbyterian Church where her parents were charter members. She wintered in Tupelo every year since 1990 and became a permanent resident August of 2013. She took pride in her needle point work and crocheting afghans. She enjoyed find-a-word puzzles and was an avid reader. She loved cooking and feeding family and friends. Her beloved family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her “Biga Mama”.
A service Celebrating her Life will be at 11 a.m., Monday, October 27, 2014 at Dublin Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Va. with theRev. Dr. Olin Whitener officiating. Burial will follow in the Bentley family plot at New Dublin Presbyterian Church Cemetery.Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 and from 10a.m. to service time Monday, October 27, 2014. Holland Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
Survivors include her daughters, Judy Franks West (Andy) of Tupelo and Bentley Rickmers (Cliff) of Tacoma, Wash.; a nephew, she raised as a son after the death of his parents, Max Cecil (Joanie) of Pearisburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Beth Grubbs (Mark) of Saltillo, Bubba Franks (Dede) of Tupelo, Miss.,Ally Carter (Jason) of Tupelo, Miss., Jessi Rickmers of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Dylan Rickmers ofSeattle, Wash; eight great-grandchildren, Wesley, Adam, Taylor, Chamberlyn, Camryn, Sam, Jordan, and Daisy. She was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings, Bro. George Bentley, Randal Bentley, and sisters, Kent Cecil and Dulcie Dabbs.
