Jean Darby of Blacksburg, VA, formerly of Fairfax, VA, passed away peacefully October 14, 2023. Jean was born and grew up in Uvalde, TX. She married Gerald M. Darby in 1951, spending 67 years together.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Ola Cummins, husband Gerald, and brother Bob Cummins.

She is survived by her sons, Dan (Martha) Darby of Kyle, TX and Bruce (Vicki) Darby of Centreville, VA, daughters Diana Carlson of Blacksburg, VA and Betsy Stuart of Christiansburg, VA, brother Bill Cummins of Pipe Creek, TX, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Jean was an avid reader, starting each day with her bible and coffee. She proudly earned her Bachelor’s degree while raising four kids and retired from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Jean and Gerald were life-long learners, participating in and supporting the Learning in Retirement Institute at George Mason University and attending Elderhostel events (now Road Scholar) throughout the country. They settled in Blacksburg’s Warm Hearth Village and enjoyed many activities and friendships made there.

A private graveside service will be held Thursday, October 18, 2021 at Westview Cemetery in Blacksburg. Arrangements are being handled by McCoy Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Warm Hearth Foundation, St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, VA, Good Samaritan Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
