amem_sunset_blueridge.jpgRandall Wayne Custer Sr., of Christiansburg, Va., passed away at home, on Tuesday, December 30, 2008. He was born on May 14, 1947, in the Belmont Community. Randall was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Custer; and his loving wife, Debbie, whom he lost in Nov. 2007.

Randall was an employee of the former Corning Glass Works, and retired from the Virginia Tech Powerhouse as a supervisor. He had many friends whom he cherished from his years working there, and his many years serving as a volunteer firefighter in Christiansburg.

He is survived by his mother, Frances Pettus; his father, Glen Sutphin; his son, Randy and wife, Rhonda; and a special cousin, Mable “Tootie” Custer and her granddaughter, Brooke, who have been wonderful caregivers. Also surviving Mr. Custer are his grandchildren, Heather, Cydney, Katy, and Bailey.

Dad was strong willed and set in his ways; never wanting help even though being crippled by polio as a child. Dad had grown weary and his body just gave out.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 1, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009, in the Horne Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Interment to follow in Belmont Cemetery.
