Cummings, Edna Cook

Edna Cook Cummings, 89, of Sparta, N.C., and formerly of Riner, Va., died Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was born in Alleghany County to the late, Carl and Lydia Finney Cook.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harvey M. Cummings; and sisters, Reba Sue Sanders and Opal C. Sheets.

She retired as postmaster in Riner, Va., in 1984.

She is survived by two sons, Royal T. Cummings, of Sparta and Quincy A. Cummings, of Salisbury; six grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Cook, of Sparta; sister, Ruth C. Holland, of Hays; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the Shiloh Cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community near Sparta. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shiloh Cemetery Fund, c/o Walter Lee Hampton, 1173 US Hwy. 221, Sparta, N.C. 28675. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta, N.C., is in charge of the arrangements.
