Ruth Charlton Cromer, 93, of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away on February 7, 2016, in Blacksburg, after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Edgar Hess Charlton and Bessie Mae Akers Charlton of Christiansburg.

Mrs. Cromer was preceded in death by her husband, Archie E. Cromer Jr.; and sisters, Kathleen Charlton Sisson, Lucy Charlton Sarver; and brother Edgar K. Charlton. Ruth is survived by her sons, A. E. Cromer III of Annapolis MD., Charlton A. Cromer; one grandson, Stuart C. Cromer, Barbara Sowell Cromer, Bobby Gail Cromer, and other extended family.

Ruth was a resident of Christiansburg and Montgomery County Virginia, she graduated from high school there and graduated from Radford College. Mrs. Cromer pursued a career in teaching and later as a business woman with a partnership and boutique in Christiansburg. Ruth was involved in numerous cultural organizations, she was a member of “Daughters of the American Revolution” and the Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Ruth Cromer was in residence in San Francisco during the last years of WWII, after her marriage in Chicago to then Naval Officer, Archie Cromer Jr.. Upon the completion of WW II, Ruth and Archie returned to Montgomery County Virginia where they established a life long residence.

Ruth Cromer was, in addition, a strong and supporting member of a team known by all friends and extended relations as “Ruth and Archie” or often “Archie and Ruth”. She was an integral partner and supporting wife in numerous endeavors pursued by her late husband and tireless in that capacity. Ruth loved to travel and enjoyed extensive world travel with Archie, including a very special trip to Cromer, England, as well as extended travel in England, Spain, California, and Hawaii.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 15, 2016, from 1-2 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Henry Lindsey and others officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
