Crockett, Barbara B.

Barbara B. Crockett, age 89, and longtime resident of Pulaski, died on Wednesday October 26, 2016 at Commonwealth Assisted Living, Fairlawn. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Landis Bartholdi and Raymond E. Bartholdi, great-nephew of Frederick Auguste Bartholdi, designer and sculptor of the Statue of Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Thorn (“Sambo”) Crockett, Jr.

At the time of her retirement in 1991, she had served for 33 years as bookkeeper and business manager at Pulaski High School and Pulaski County High School. For many decades, she and her husband were leaders in the Virginia saddle horse industry, belonging to local horse show associations, and playing major roles in establishing annual horse shows in Wythe and Pulaski counties. For many years, Barbara was secretary for the Pulaski County Horse Show. She and Sambo also had a lengthy affiliation with the American Saddle Horse Association of Virginia (ASHAV), and Barbara served many terms as its treasurer. In 2010, they were inducted into the ASHAV Saddle Horse Hall of Fame, in recognition of their lifelong contributions to the Virginia saddle horse industry.

Surviving are her son, Samuel Thorn Crockett, III of LaCruz, Mexico, and two sisters-in-law, Agnes C. Davis, Ft. Chiswell, and Emma Thorn Lively, Pulaski. Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Cove John Cemetery, Crockett’s Cove, Wythe Co.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Saddle Horse Association of Virginia. Those needing directions to the cemetery should meet at the entrance to Cracker Barrel in Wytheville, and proceed to the cemetery together. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
