Cox, Walter E.

Walter E. (Wally) Cox, 67, of 1315 Harvest Ridge Lane, Blacksburg, Va. 24060 died Saturday, June 30, 2007 at his summer residence in Chautauqua, N.Y.

He was born January 13, 1940 in Salem, Ohio, the only child of the late Eldon E. and Opal Rickly Cox. Wally was a 1958 graduate of Rockford High School, Rockford, Mich. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, where he earned his BS in Commerce and his Bachelor of Laws.

He graduated from the University of Virginia with a Masters of City Planning and Urban Design. He was a doctoral candidate at Virginia Tech in Environmental Design and Planning. Wally was a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Virginia Government Finance Officers Association, Virginia State Bar, and the American Planning Association. He was a registered CPA in Virginia and North Carolina.

He was a founding partner of Robinson, Farmer, Cox Associates, a regional accounting firm in Virginia where he had worked for nearly 40 years. In addition, Wally was very active in his church choir at Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg, as well as the Blacksburg Master Choral and Opera Roanoke. Wally was an active member of the Little Town Players of Bedford, Va. where he thoroughly enjoyed his other life on stage. He was also a member of the Chautauqua Choir and the Chautauqua Motet Choir during his summer residence at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Virginia Hunting Cox; a daughter, Deanna L. Cox and son-in-law, Hal Brown; a son, Leonard C. Cox; and one grandson, Eli E. Brown, all of Blacksburg, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 314 N. Bridge St., Bedford, VA 24060; The Little Town Players Inc., P.O. Box 437, Bedford, VA 24523; or The Cox Family Charitable Trust, Inc., 1205 Cedar Orchard Dr. East, Blacksburg, VA 24060. The Lind Funeral Home in Jamestown, N.Y. is handling arrangements.
