Donald Wesley (Don) Cox, 78, beloved husband, father, brother and uncle of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord at his home on Wednesday, January 10, 2007.

He was born March 17, 1928 in Wise, Va. to the late John Wesley Cox, Sr. and Dallas R. Cox. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Wesley Cox, Jr. and one sister, Nannie Horton.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irene Matherly Cox; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Edmond (Bobby) Barker of Dublin, Sandra and Rodger Gravley of Max Meadows, and Melissa Custer of Christiansburg. Also surviving are three sisters, Madeline Akers, Jeanette Akers of Christiansburg and Dorothy Berry of Stanley, Va.; one brother, Thomas Wesley Cox of Owensboro, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Michelle, Kimberly, and Thomas Barker; Christopher Gravely; Dustin Custer and Brooke Miles. Also surviving are many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special friends.

He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, enjoyed working with cars, heavy equipment, wrestling, and a good game of horseshoes. He worked 44 years for the Virginia Department of Transportation. He also worked at Jack’s Garage, Stanley R. Cupp, and Carter’s Excavating Company. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Woodmen of the World.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Hospice, Dr. McCoy, Dr. T.P. Davis, and their staff for all the loving care and support they provided. A great big thank you to all the friends and family for the love, prayers, visits and support during this time. It has meant a lot to the family. Donald was loved by all who met and grew to know him. He left an impression on those that came in contact with him. He was a cool dude to his family and friends and appreciated celebrating his life with all who knew him.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Hurd and the Rev. Ray Kingrea officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
