David Eugene Countiss, 65, of Fairlawn, VA, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Lewis Gale Hospital – Montgomery, from a short battle with lung cancer. Dave was born November 12, 1956 in Radford, VA, the son of the late Kendal & Ella Countiss.

Dave graduated from Pulaski County High School where he was a proud member of the Cougar Football team. He graduated with a welding degree form New River Community College and used that skill as an employee of Xalay in Pulaski for many years. His most recent employer was Federal Mogul in Blacksburg. His passion was watching football. The Cougars, Redskins ( no matter what their new name is) and the Virginia Tech Hokies. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He loved spending his summer vacations at Myrtle Beach where he gained the nickname “Uncle Elmo.”

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Kendal & Ella Willis Countiss, his brother, Robert and his father-in-law, Don Vest of White Gate, VA.

Dave is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Sandi Vest Countiss; his son, Christopher Vest; his granddaughter, Haley Vest (Ryan & Christopher) of Narrows, VA; his mother-in-law, Dolly Vest; brothers-in-law, Gary Vest (Eppie) and Johnny Vest; his nephews, Jeremy & Haleigh Vest, Joshua Vest and Benjamin Vest, all of Warrenton, VA and Jonathan & Alivia Vest, of Christiansburg, VA; his special great-nephew, Hudson Vest; several special friends, including Charles, Ann & Laura McDonald and Paul & Dianna Haga, all of Dublin, VA, Amy Vest, of Ripplemead, VA, and very special friend, Charlie Henderson, of Sugar Run, VA.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 5:30 P.M. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Charlie Henderson, Jeremy Vest & Jonathan Vest officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 P.M. until service time, 5:30 P.M. Following the memorial service, the community will host a pot luck meal at the White Gate Community Center for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in Dave’s honor to the Poplar Hill Volunteer Fire Dept., c/o Mike Talbert, 725 Walkers Creek Valley Rd., Pearisburg, VA 24134.
