navyWilliam Bane (Bill) Copenhaver Sr., 95, of Radford, Va., and Lake Wales, Fla., passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Bill was born on November 30, 1917, in Radford, Va., to the late Grace and Luther M. Copenhaver. As a young man, he joined the United State Navy and served his country in World War II as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate third class and gunnery instructor. Bill married the late Sarah Duncan Copenhaver in 1936 and they made their home in Radford. After Sarah’s passing in 1990, Bill relocated to Lake Wales, Fla. After returning home from the war, Bill worked in the men’s clothing business. He owned and operated Copenhaver’s Menswear until his retirement in 1980. Aside from the clothing business, Bill had many interests. He enjoyed woodworking and was an expert gardener, growing vegetables and flowers of all kinds in his backyard. He was a member of the Tyler Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, and later was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Radford. He was also a member of the Harvey-Howe- Carper post of the American Legion. Bill enjoyed being active, walking several miles a day well into his late 80s. He was also a tireless volunteer at Radford Community Hospital, and delivered “meals on wheels” to shut-ins in Radford for many years. Bill is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Donna Copenhaver, of Salem; a half sister, Mary Waldron Ball, of Gaitersburg, Md.; two grandchildren and their spouses; and three great- grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013, at Sunrise Memorial Burial Park in Fairlawn, Va.
