Harriett Gevirtz Cooper of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Monday, April 18, 2022. She was born in the South Bronx, N.Y., on August 7, 1927, to Helen and Louis Gevirtz, the eldest of three children.

She went to Hunter College earning her PhD in Animal behavior and worked as a researcher, looking for a cure for epilepsy. She was passionate about the arts, science, and the environment. In later life, Harriett volunteered for the League of Woman voters and played the alto recorder and bass drum with community groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Cooper and brother, Norman Gevirtz. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Kaplan and Lucie Traylor; her brother, Edwin Gevirtz; and grandson, Christopher Baudo.

A gathering for friends and family will be announced at a later date.
