Harless Edward Conley, 89, of Narrows, Va., went to his Heavenly home on Friday, July 31, 2009, from his home on Wolf Creek, surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on January 14, 1920, at Chapel, and was the son of the late Elbert Bowman and Virginia Elizabeth Palmer Conley.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Frances Shrader Conley; five brothers, William Eldridge Conley, Byron Conley, Lester Conley, David Conley and Arnold Conley; eight sisters, Lena Mullins, Helen Rushing, Vula Conley, Etta Rushing, Reva Steadman, Clarice, Fannie and Margaret Conley; and two sons-in-law, Richard Wood and Pastor Bill Sleasman.

He was a member of East Chapel Community Church. Together, Harless and Frances operated Chapel Grocery for 30 years on Wolf Creek Road. Throughout his life, Harless enjoyed cattle farming and helping others. A loving father and grandfather, he’ll be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Della Virginia (Ginny) Sleasman, of Narrows; two sons, Lockard Conley and wife, Gloria, of Tazewell, and Phillip Conley, of Narrows; four granddaughters, Sandra Wood and Stacey Marshall, both of Ruckersville, Va., Marci Payne and husband, James, of Tazewell, and April Conley, of Greensboro, N.C.; five great grandchildren, Ashley Harlow Shifflett and husband, Steven, Phillip Harlow, Logan Marshall, Abigail Payne, and Bryce Gibson; one great-great granddaughter, Aubrey Grace Shifflett; a very special niece, Debbie Skeens, of Narrows; along with several other nieces, nephews and cousins; and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2009, East Chapel Community Church on Wolf Creek Road in Narrows with the Rev. Tim Lacy, the Rev. A.W. Skeens, and the Rev. Leon O’Quinn officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrader Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows on Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m.
