Compton, Roy Vernon

Roy Vernon Compton, of Christiansburg, Va., was born on March 9, 1928, and died on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Floyd County, Va., to the late Buford Eldridge (Eck) and Elsie Salmons Compton. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arlen and Harold Compton.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mae C. Compton; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Dusty Cromer, of Christiansburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Jeanie Compton, of Blacksburg, and Richard and Susan Compton, of Christiansburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Tim and Ginger Cromer, of Christiansburg, Tony Cromer and fiance, Amy Poff, of Knoxville, Tenn., Kenny Compton, of Christiansburg, Jessica Compton, of Christiansburg, Jasmine Compton and Jason Compton, of Blacksburg, Jeremy and Sara Compton, of Christiansburg, and Trevor Compton, of Christiansburg. In addition, he is survived by his great-grandchildren, Danielle Broce, of Christiansburg, Cassidy and Kaylyn Cromer, of Christiansburg, Callie Cromer, of Christiansburg, K.J. Compton, of Christiansburg, Caleb Cromer, of Christiansburg, and Josie Cromer, of Morristown, Tenn.

Roy retired from Volvo Trucks in 1990. He enjoyed woodworking and often displayed his skills at local craft shows. He and Mae enjoyed traveling, especially to Gatlinburg, Tenn. He was also a devoted fan of Christiansburg High School football, enjoying their games for many years through the 2012 season. His family will always cherish his memory.

There will be a visitation on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Sunset Cemetery at 3 p.m. Pastor Beaver Terry will officiate.
