He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 and ½ years, Lillian Bowman Cockram; and brothers, Coleman and Edgar. Remaining to cherish his memory are daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Lennie Merida; and brother-in-law, Harry B. Bowman, of Roanoke; plus several nieces, nephews and cousins. He served in World War II with the United States Army Air Corp as a Sergeant performing several different duties. After he returned from the service he, his wife and brother opened and operated the Floyd Diner for several years. He graduated from Ringling Brothers School of Art in Sarasota, Fla., and worked for R.A.A.P. as a graphic artist and illustrator, retiring in 1982 with 33 years of service. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, browsing antique shops, bird watching, antique cars and cruising the Parkway. He was a kind and generous man, leaving behind many good friends who played a very important part in his life and were very special to him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Floyd County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 257, Floyd, Va. 24091 or to the Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, P.O. Box 20986, Roanoke, Va. 24018. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service being held 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd with the Rev. Robert officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park, 5970 Grassy Hill Road, Boones Mill, Va. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home in Floyd, Va.
