Virginia Thompson Childress, 91, of Christiansburg, peacefully passed away at home with her family on Monday, December 31, 2007.

Born in West Virginia she was a proud graduate of Marshall University, having received her Bachelor’s of Education in 1947, and her Masters in 1953. She taught in the public school system in West Virginia for over 42 years. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women and many other professional associations.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in South Charleston, W.Va., after moving to Christiansburg she became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was active in her Circle and taught the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

The daughter of the late James Patton and Rosa Rife Thompson, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mason James Childress; two sisters and ten brothers.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Rosa T. and Lee Griffith; grandson, Justin L. Griffith; best friend, Juanita Thomas, all of Christiansburg; many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008, at St Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David A. Goodpasture and the Rev. Brian Siegel officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, pallbearers will be classmates and teammates of her grandson, Justin, whom she enjoyed seeing grow.
