Reverend Bryan Childress, 85, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Bob Childress and Mamie Lelia Montgomery Childress ,as well as his wife Pauline Vaughn Childress.

He is survived by: sister, Marie Childress Lucas, brothers, Paul J. Childress, Reverend William R. Childress and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He attended King College in Bristol and Union theological Seminary in Richmond. During his long and remarkable career as a pastor, Rev. Childress served a number of churches in Carroll, Floyd, and Patrick Counties. He also served as pastor of Gilbert Presbyterian Church in Gilbert, WV and Stone Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marion, VA. At Stone Memorial, which he served for over 20 years, he was instrumental in helping to establish and solidify the union of the four churches which comprise that field of call.

Rev. Childress gave tirelessly and unselfishly of himself, and his influence upon the people of southwest Virginia shall endure for years to come. For Bryan Childress was the embodiment of a phrase he used to close his favorite benediction: “Only one life-it shall soon pass; only what is done for Christ shall last.”

Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, at the Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Donald Nance, Rev. Eugene Baldwin, Joe Quesenberry, Gary Marshall and Stewart Childress officiating. Interment followed in the Buffalo Mountain Cemetery.
