Rosalie Jane Johnson Charlton, 92, of Narrows, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. She was born in Narrows on March 9, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Earl Grayson and Janie Drinkard Johnson.

She was a life-long resident of Narrows. She was a resident of Country View Assisted Living the last few years of her life.

Mrs. Charlton was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Monroe Charlton; a son, John Mark Charlton; and a granddaughter, Sara Jane Benson; and a brother, Brooks Johnson.

Mrs. Charlton was a graduate of Mary Washington College. She enjoyed teaching for many years in the Giles County School System. Prior to her long teaching career, she made many beautiful birthday and wedding cakes for residents of the county. Mrs. Charlton was a life-long, active member of Narrows First United Methodist Church where she served on several committees, was a member of the Chancel Choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Susanna Wesley Circle. She was a loving mother, committed to her family, good friend to many, and active member of the Narrows community.

She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Richardson and husband, Doug, of Narrows, Elizabeth “Kit” Benson and husband, Alan, of Griffin, Ga.; grandchildren, Benjamin Richardson, of Narrows, Brian Richardson, of Pearisburg, Amanda Gay and husband, James, of Macon, Ga., Carrie Hubbard and husband, Wesley, of Hoover, Ala., Christopher Charlton, of Memphis, Tenn., and Calan Charlton, of Jonesborough, Tenn. She is also survived by six greatgrandchildren.

A Service of the Celebration of Mrs. Charlton’s life will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Narrows with the Rev. Christopher Brown and the Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church in Narrows Monday starting at 10:30 a.m.
