Bobby Dean Chafin, 89, of Greensboro, N.C. passed away at home on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Wilma Rush Chafin; three loving sons, Steve (Ginny) Chafin of Brown Summit, N.C., Gary (Vicky) Chafin of Roanoke, Va. and David (Lynn) Chafin of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, Kristen, Lauren, Matt, Daniel, Rebecca, Mark, Chris and Sam; and 19 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Gilbert (Doris) Chafin of Christiansburg, Va. and sisters-in-law, Donna Chafin of Raleigh, N.C., Doris (Gilbert) Chafin of Christiansburg, Ella Ruth Hutchins of Christiansburg, Va. and Shirley Adkins (Bob) of Fellum, Va.

Bob was a deacon at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. He was also a Korean War veteran and received a purple heart for miraculously surviving a gunshot wound that entered and left his body without inuring a major organ. After his stint in the Army, Bob worked in the car dealership industry in N.C. and Va. for several years, then joined the U.S. Postal Service in Greensboro in 1978 and retired as postmaster out of Sparta, N.C. in 1992. After retirement, Bob and Wilma returned to Christiansburg for a few years, then, resided in Oak Island, N.C. before returning to Greensboro in 1999.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Senior Pastor Dr. Daniel Dickard will officiate both services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Friendly Avenue Baptist Church (Building Fund), 4800 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at
