Thelma J. Carden, 96, of Peterstown, WV, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Country View Assisted Living in Peterstown, WV.

She was born April 16, 1920 in Ripplemead, Va., and was the daughter of the late Lacy and Verna Givens Johnston. She was the last surviving member of her family, was a member of Peterstown United Methodist Church, where she was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Peterstown Woman’s Club, a member of Seneca Trail Garden Club, and attended Radford College. She was a teacher for the Giles County Board of Education and worked at Celanese in the PA lab.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Manley Jennings “Jake” Carden, two brothers, Fred Johnston and Lawrence Johnston, three sisters Josephine Teass, Eula Stafford, and Lois Reynolds, and a sister-in-law, Kathleen. Surviving is one son, Robert E. “Bobby” Carden and wife Anita of Peterstown, WV; one daughter, Anita Crance and husband Barry of Maxwellton, WV; Five grandchildren, Bradley Scott Crance, Bryan Ross Crance, Amber LeAnn McGuire, Jonah Dane Carden, and Jacob Seth Carden; one Great granddaughter, Chloe Marie Carden, and special friend, Vella “Tincey” Broyles.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Peterstown United Methodist Church in Peterstown, WV, with Dr. John Sauvage and Pastor Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg, WV. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until time of service.
