James Finley “Jimmy” Canterbury, age 69, of Peterstown, WV, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022, at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born February 4, 1953, in Princeton, WV, he was the son of the late Charles Finley Canterbury and Erma Brown Canterbury.

Jimmy was well known for his masonry work, having worked as a brick mason since the age of 18. He had recently retired from the Red Sulphur Public Service District with over 35 years of service, working with his special friend and boss, Porter Robertson. Jimmy loved the outdoors, deer and turkey hunting and spending time at his cabin on Stinking Lick.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Canterbury; infant brother, Charles Samuel Canterbury; nephew, Steve Canterbury; brother-in-law, Carl Sutphin; and his close friend, Mike Butler.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Martha Mills Canterbury; one daughter, Michelle (Adrean) Harris of Blacksburg, VA; one son, Michael Canterbury (Holly and daughter Gracie) of Peterstown, WV; two granddaughters, Olivia and Olyssa Harris of Blacksburg; two sisters, Joyce Sutphin and Janet (Phil) Weiss, all of Peterstown, WV; sister-in-law, Sylvia Canterbury and special sister-in-law Marsha Farley; nieces, Lisa Mustain and Deanna Gore; nephew, Curtis Sutphin; great nephew, Jason Ballard; and extended family of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Additionally, Jimmy will be sadly missed by three special little girls, Stella and Daniella Shoda, and Scarlet Meadows; Madison and Parker Noonkester (Parker had said he was changing his last name to Canterbury); Cristi (Ellison) and Tucker Carbaugh; Carla Jo (Boothe) Hetherington and many other children that had come through Jimmy and Martha’s home throughout the years. Also surviving are his close friends, Ronnie Bradley, Ronnie Worrell, Terry Wills, Dave Thornton, Adam and Rae Mann and the guys from the Saturday night poker crew, Tommy Keatley, Brian Mann, Bobby Moore, Tommy Dunn, and Cecil Mills; and the gang from the D.P. Bench at the Shell Station.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00PM on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastor Pete Dunford officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00PM until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. It was Jimmy’s wishes to be cremated and have his ashes taken to his beloved cabin on Stinking Lick.
