Virginia Allen Loy Campbell, 77, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital following a two-month illness. She was born on October 23, 1932, in Tarboro, N.C., the daughter of William Webb Loy and Virginia Gray Thigpen Loy.

She grew up in Eustis, Fla., and was a 1950 graduate of Eustis High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Gregory Campbell, at the age of 18, and upon his graduation from Florida State University, moved to Blacksburg in 1955. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

She was a lifelong Episcopalian. An avid bridge player, she earned the rank of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League in October 2009. Her competitive spirit extended beyond bridge to include a wide range of sports, both as a participant and spectator. She served at historic Smithfield Plantation for many years as a docent and for two years as the Director.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Hugh Gregory Campbell; three children, Hugh Gregory Campbell Jr. and wife, Anne Judkins Campbell, of Blacksburg, Va., Loy Campbell Bollinger and husband, Mark Jeffrey Bollinger, of Montrose, Colo., and Allen Webb Campbell and wife, Deborah Byrd Campbell, of Blacksburg; four grandchildren, James Gregory Bollinger, Laura Bollinger Zimmerman and husband, Andrew Todd Zimmerman, Wesley Judkins Campbell, and Loy Anne Campbell; one sister, Snow Loy Roberts and husband, Bennett Watson Cowper Roberts, of Durham, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lynn Campbell Nix and husband, Clemer Dolan Nix Jr., of Prospect, Ky.; nephews, Bennett Watson Cowper Roberts Jr. and wife, Angela Roberts, Webb Loy Roberts and wife, Jennifer Roberts, Wendell Scott Nix and wife, Catherine Nix, Marcus Dolan Nix, and Jonathan Douglas Nix; niece, Snow Loy Roberts; and great-nieces and nephews, Madison Roberts, Nicholas Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts, Chloe Roberts, Penelope Roberts, Laura Nix, Alexander Nix, and Christopher Nix.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, at Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg with the Rev. Scott A. West and the Rev. Claud W. McCauley officiating. A private burial will occur in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home on Thursday, January 7, 2010, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
