Hanford Palmer Caldwell, 69, of Christiansburg, died Monday, July 23, 2007 at New River Valley Medical Center. He was born in Montgomery County on March 7, 1938 to the late Samuel Steven and Sadie Reed Caldwell.

Palmer served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 where he served with the Military Police. He began his law enforcement career with the Blacksburg Police Department in 1963 retired in 2000 as Captain of the Virginia Tech Police Department with 34 years of service. He graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy in 1974. He was also a Life Member of the Blacksburg Fire Department and Blacksburg Rescue Squad. He was also a member of the Montgomery County Coal Miners Heritage Association.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Blair Caldwell, Christiansburg; two daughters, Michele E. Caldwell and fiancee, Darel Wrenn, Riner, Pamela L. Caldwell, Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Corey C. Morrell and Sadie A. Morrell, Riner; his sister, Mamie L. Webb, Blacksburg.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Porter Riner officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106A, Roanoke, Va., 24141, or the Blacksburg Fire Department, Blacksburg Rescue Squad, Christiansburg Fire Department, or the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
