William Austin Cabbage, 75, of Radford, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of First Baptist Church in Radford. He was a chemical engineer at the Radford Arsenal where he retired after 37 years of service.

He was born in Union County, Tenn., on January 21, 1934, the son of the late Fred Austin and Thelma Beeler Cabbage.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Julia “Judy” Kidd Cabbage, of Radford; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael C. and Sondra Cabbage, of Baltimore, Md., and Dr. Brian W. Cabbage, of Radford; two grandchildren, Max and Sofia Cabbage, of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters and brother-in-law, Anita C. Lee, of Tucson, Ariz., Rosemary C. Cabbage, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Carol C. Hill, of Staunton, and Susan C. and Rolland Waters, of Vail, Ariz.; mother-in-law, Marie C. Leffel, of Radford; sisters in-law, Betty L. Fox, of Alexandria, and Betty S. Kidd, of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.

Thanks to all the people that helped in Bill’s care, Dr. Richard Shepherd; the many helpers from Medi Home Health and Hospice; Donnie Hale, Bill’s caregiver; and the doctors and nurses that treated Bill in the emergency room at Carilion NRV Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Dr. James E. Baucom and the Rev. Arlis “J.R.” Shelor officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the funeral home.
