Butterworth, George Lynwood
George Lynwood Butterworth, 83, of Christiansburg VA, passed away Saturday September 3, 2022, surrounded by his loving family and his trusted dog, Mack, following a courageous 10 year battle dealing with complications from a stroke.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Hall Butterworth; parents, Virginia Epperly Butterworth and Thomas Lynwood Butterworth; and half brothers Dewey Dickerson and Bobby Dickerson.
George was a wonderful friend, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. It is worth mentioning that he cared for his wife Mary, who suffered from Alzheimer’s for many years at home, prior to her being admitted into Heritage Hall for care. George never missed a day visiting her prior to her death. In his early years George played sports while attending William Byrd High School and Christiansburg High School. George received his Associates Degree from New River Community College.
George worked and retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant, following 35 years of service, working in multiple management positions. George was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and especially loved hunting quail, grouse and turkey. George enjoyed gardening, woodworking and all sports, especially football and was a member of Faith Christian Church in Christiansburg, VA.
George is survived by a son, Terry Butterworth of Christiansburg, VA; his 3 grandchildren, Megan Butterworth (Brandon) Stanardsville, VA, Nicholas Butterworth (Amy) Boise, Idaho, and Alec Butterworth (Samantha) Barboursville, VA; his great grandchildren London Amelia, Madelyn Rose, Archer Grey and Alec Cade; a special niece Star Bolling; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the multiple members of the medical staff at Lewis Gale Montgomery Regional Hospital, Heritage Hall Rehabilitation Center, Intrepid Home Health and Good Samaritan Hospice Care; as well as the many special caregivers that cared for him at home.
A Memorial Service will be held for George at a later date.
