Burton, Doris Spicer

Doris Ann Spicer Burton, 82 of Narrows, VA was called to her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Doris, affectionately known to so many as “Nanny”, was born on September 27, 1940, in Pearisburg, VA to the late Henry William Spicer and Virginia Lane Spicer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Robert Lee Burton; a sister, Frances S. Hudson; a brother, Maury Spicer; mother-in-law, Dollie Horne; and special friend of the family, Ben Richardson.

Doris was retired from the Celanese Plant in Narrows with 40 years of service. She cherished traveling to watch her children and grandchildren play ball and attended nearly every game that was played by Narrows High School. A devout Green Wave fan, she often occupied the same seat in the corner of the gym consistently offering suggestions to both players and refs. Her love for sports began early in life and she relished playing softball in the women’s league at Pearisburg. As she moved into retirement, the sporting events were evenly balanced with her passion for working puzzles, especially the daily crossword in the Roanoke Times. More than anything else, she had an unwavering love for her family.

Doris is survived by two daughters, Teri Burton Smith (Roger) of Jacksonville, AL and Michelle Burton of Narrows; one son, Michael Lee Burton (Erin) of Pearisburg; seven grandchildren, Bryan Pruett (Kelly), Courtney Busby (Jason), Erica Gautier (Christopher), Sydney Thompson, Spencer Lindsey, Savanna Hammond (Kyle) and Chandler Burton; 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Spicer of Fredericksburg and Jimmy Spicer of Pearisburg; and one sister, Rebecca Spicer of Dublin; brother-in-law, Basil Burton (Gladys) of Narrows; many loving nieces and nephews and special friend, David Thompson. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care provided by Brittany Bailey, Brittany Parcell, Nora Hale, Tammy Davis and Giles Carilion Hospital and Clinic.

Funeral services will be conducted at Mountain View Ministries Church of God of Prophecy in Narrows, Friday, March 31, 2023, at 11am with the Rev. Rebecca Spicer officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at the Givens – Riffe Funeral Home Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Narrows Athletic Fund at P.O. Box 114 Narrows, Va. 24124. Online condolences can be sent to the family at riffefuneralservice.com.
