Gregory John (Greg) Buhyoff, 88, of Blacksburg, Va., and formerly of Dearborn, Mich., passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2010. He was born on October 22, 1921, in North Tonawanda, N.Y., to Helen and John Buhyoff.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Josephine; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Marilyn Buhyoff, all of Blacksburg; grandson and partner, Matt Buhyoff and Alyson Obert, of Washington, D.C.; and brother, Chet Buhyoff, of Malone, N.Y. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Greg was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan; brothers, Terrence and John; and sister, Florence Van Luven.

Greg grew up in Lockport, N.Y., where he played semi professional football. He enjoyed music and played several instruments. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy in the North Atlantic aboard the submarine chaser, USS Surprise. After discharge, he attended sheet metal apprentice school and spent his working life as a talented master craftsman. He was a past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #51 in Dearborn, Mich., and was active in the Boy Scouting and in many other church and civic organizations. Since moving to Virginia in 2005, Greg enjoyed having many new friends and living close to nature at Warm Hearth Village.

There will be a funeral service 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Blacksburg. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 11, 2010, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg, Va., 540-552-3211.
