Buckland, Carl Hinton

Carl Buckland, 87, of Fairlawn, passed away in the early morning hours of March 27, 2007.

He was the fifth child of Luther and Maggie Sue Buckland, sharing their love with his brothers and sisters Robert, Kelly, Louise, Augusta and Elwood. He grew up in the small Pulaski County village of Belspring where his life revolved around family, church, school and hard work.

After graduating from high school in 1937, he worked at Burlington Mills as a cloth grader until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. During World War II Carl was assigned as a postal clerk overseas in North Africa, and later in Italy. Both places he delighted in talking about with his friends and family.

Once home from the war, Carl knew his beloved Pulaski County was where he would live the rest of his life. He returned to Burlington Mills where he worked until his retirement in 1985. On Christmas Day 1948, he married Virginia L. Woodrum of Portsmouth, Ohio. The newlyweds made their home in Fairlawn, the community spurred by the growth of the Radford arsenal during the war.

Carl was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church in Radford, where he found great pleasure working in the kitchen during potluck suppers and other church activities. With a humble heart like that of a devoted servant, Carl lived by the motto: “I’d rather try to make people happy than to be happy myself” and his life always reflected this belief.

Two simple pleasures he treasured were watching his purple martins return each spring to the birdhouse that teetered 15 feet above the earth and plowing the garden soil where he carefully placed each tomato plant which by summer’s end would yield prize-sized tomatoes to share with his neighbors.

Carl was a loving husband to Virginia, his wife of 58 years; “Daddy” to his children Susan E. Buckland, Karen B. Brown and her husband Robert, and Mark S. Buckland and his wife Becky; “Paw Paw” to grandchildren Nathan K. Brown and his wife Cari, Jared H. and Benjamin J. Buckland, and Joshua W. Brown who passed away in February 2004; brother to his sister, Augusta Dulaney; and a great friend and neighbor to many.

The family suggests that anyone wishing to make a donation in Carl’s memory, please consider the Hospice care facility in Dublin: Beulah House, 4704 Caddell Lane, Dublin, Va. 24084.

The family looks forward to greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening March 30, 2007 at Calvary Baptist Church, 624 Sixth Street, Radford. The service to celebrate Carl’s life will follow at 7 p.m. The burial will be Saturday morning March 31, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.
