Brotherton, John Arthur

John Arthur Brotherton, 77, of Blacksburg, Virginia, passed away on August 15th, 2023. He was born on June 5, 1946. After graduating from Blacksburg High School, he attended Ferrum College. John was a talented athlete, especially in football, setting many High School records. He served in the United States National Guard before becoming a police officer at VT, where he retired as a Captain after 30 years.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur “Chick” and Ruby Myers Brotherton, brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Jane Brotherton.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Brotherton; children, Scott Brotherton (Jen) and Brian Brotherton (Jennifer); grandchildren, Whitney Linkous (Nick), John Brotherton, Daniel Brotherton, Rachel Brotherton, Thomas Adamo, Brianna Linkous (Daymon), Kasey Adamo, and Kale Adamo; two special nieces, Rosa Jennings (Stephen) and Robin Carner (Bobby Jr.).

John was an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was also a master gardener, growing tomatoes he shared with the Price’s Fork Community. If John was not in the garden, you could always find him sitting in his garage, where friends and neighbors would honk and wave, or drop in for a visit. Through the years as John raised his family, he was a mentor, role model, and coach to his sons and many of their friends and others. John was also a VT fan through and through, and he never missed a grandchild’s sports game. His passion, however, was being a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

A special thanks to the Carilion Home Health team and the nurses at NRV Carilion Hospital for the care given to John and his family.
