Brooks, June Vernona Hanson
June Vernona Hanson Brooks, 86, of Richmond, formerly of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2013. Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank Evans Hanson and Ruth Elizabeth Tubbs Hanson along with her loving husband of 53 years, James Fogelsong Brooks.
She is survived by her three daughters, Carol Ann Brooks Jones and her husband, Dr. Kim David Jones, of Kingsville, Texas; Kathleen Brooks Sprague and her husband, Wayne Edward Sprague Sr., of Johnson City, Tenn.; and Virginia Lee Brooks, of Richmond. She also leaves behind her four grandchildren to cherish her memory, Allyson Leigh Jones of San Antonio, Texas; Alex Brooks Jones and his wife, Kattie Turner Jones of Amarillo, Texas; Wayne Edward Sprague Jr., of Gray, Tenn.; and Megan Sprague Pleasant and her husband, Matthew Evan Pleasant of Charlotte, N.C. June was born on July 14, 1927, in Somerville, Mass. After attending Katharine Gibbs School in New York, she met and married the love of her life, James, on October 4, 1951. June took great pleasure in becoming a homemaker and mother to her three girls, often making their clothing and even teaching them to sew. She was an avid crafter who skillfully knitted and quilted. June was a happy and vibrant woman who loved to laugh and enjoyed life. As June lived in Blacksburg for 25 years, the family will hold graveside services at Westview Cemetery on Roanoke Street at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2013, with the Rev. David F. Coady presiding over the ceremony. The family wishes to thank the staff of Chestnut Grove Nursing Home in Richmond, VA for their kindness as well as Hospice Community Care and their staff for her end-of-life care. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the national Alzheimer’s Association in June’s name. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg.
